Osiris Reborn Character Creation — Origins, Classes & Twin
Updated September 23, 2026 · Facts cross-checked against the sources listed below
What you customize
Owlcat’s August 2025 post: “you will be able to create your own captain, customize their sex, appearance, and select a background (Earther, Martian, or Belter). Your identical twin will also change based on your own appearance.” Creative Director Mishulin describes it as creating two characters: pick a male captain and J is male too.
You play the captain, a Pinkwater Security mercenary who escapes the Eros incident and takes command of the Gemini. No official material gives the captain a fixed name. Everything calls them “the captain”.
The three origins
From the official “Introducing Origins” dev blog: your origin gives “unique bonuses to your exploration skills, starting gear, unique armor look, and affects you and your twin’s physical appearance.” Each origin also has its own quest chain to win your faction’s support.
| Origin | Origin perk | Early access and contacts |
|---|---|---|
| Earther | Gravity’s Gift: +1 to Athletics checks | Contacts on Luna. Does not understand Belter Creole. |
| Martian | Not announced; Martian is not playable in the Beta | The only origin allowed to land on Mars early in the game. Ceres is hostile to Martians after the Canterbury. |
| Belter | Tekimang: +1 to all Engineering checks | A loyal friend on Ceres. Understands Belter Creole. Very tall, from low gravity. |
Your origin does not lock your loyalty. The choices blog: “A Belter can support Earth, a Martian can turn against Mars, and an Earther can fight for the Belt.” Game Design Director Rastorguev says combat is “one of the areas least affected by your origin”, and its story impact is strongest in the first half of the game. You fill in your backstory later, in conversations with J and others.
Some wikis carry a backstory paragraph for each origin, such as the Earther who lost a “golden ticket” off Basic Assistance. We couldn’t trace that text to an official page, so treat it as ⚠ unconfirmed flavor text.
No classes: specializations and skill trees
Mishulin: “There are no classes—there are playstyles you’re building for yourself.” At the start you pick a specialization that sets your first skills and gear. Two are named so far: cyber warfare specialist, called Hacker in the Beta, and firearms specialist, called Officer. The full list hasn’t been published.
Every captain has four combat trees, two exploration trees and one origin perk. All four combat trees stay open whatever you start as:
- Marksmanship (“Shooter” in the Beta): weapon mastery, crit damage, accuracy.
- Gadgets: gadget damage and duration, cooldowns.
- Survivalist: health, armor and armor regen, bonuses when exposed or in melee.
- Leader: buffs for companions, and for you when they are near.
Exploration skills named so far are Persuasion, Engineering, Cyber Sabotage and Athletics. Your abilities come from the gadgets you equip, not the skill trees. Any character can use any of the five weapon classes: assault rifles, shotguns, pistols, SMGs and sniper rifles. You carry one long gun and one short gun. Respec is done on your ship, for a fee that rises each time.
Personality is tracked, not picked
You don’t choose a personality at creation. A hidden archetype system watches whether you put people, profit, your faction or survival first, and shapes NPC reactions and your epilogue. More on the FAQ.
In the Beta: four presets
The Beta has no character creator. You pick one of four presets: Male Earther Officer, Female Belter Officer, Male Earther Hacker or Female Belter Hacker. Starting points from Owlcat’s Beta guide:
| Preset | Starting skills |
|---|---|
| Officer | 4 Shooter, 1 Leader, 2 Persuasion, 1 Engineering |
| Hacker | 1 Shooter, 4 Gadgets, 2 Cyber Sabotage, 1 Persuasion |
The Hacker preset is the one to pick if you want to try the hacking side of the game.
Voices, and the male recast
The captain is fully voiced as male or female. On May 20, 2026, after Beta feedback, Owlcat wrote that the male protagonist and J voices “felt less expressive than we wanted” and that it is changing them. The female voices are not affected. Neither the original nor the replacement male actor has been named. A name circulating for the female captain comes from a single low-quality site, so we don’t repeat it.
Still unannounced
- The Martian origin perk.
- The full list of starting specializations.
- How detailed the appearance sliders are.
- Whether voice or pronouns can be chosen separately from sex.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Osiris Reborn have character creation?
Yes. You customize your captain’s sex and appearance and choose an origin: Earther, Martian or Belter. The Beta has no creator, only four presets.
Can you play as a female character?
Yes. You choose your captain’s sex, and both the male and female captain are fully voiced. Your twin J matches whichever you pick.
Does Osiris Reborn have classes?
No fixed classes. You pick a starting specialization, such as cyber warfare specialist or firearms specialist, but all four combat skill trees stay open and you can respec on your ship.
Who do you play as?
Your own captain, a Pinkwater Security mercenary who escapes the Eros incident with their twin J. The captain has no fixed name in any official material.
Why is the male voice changing?
After Beta feedback, Owlcat said the male protagonist and J “felt less expressive than we wanted” and is recasting both. Neither the original nor the new actor has been named.
