This roster comes from the companion data on Owlcat’s official site. PC Gamer’s exclusive reveal and Wccftech agree on all seven names, origins and posts. The Exploit column is the type of combo each companion sets up, from GamingBolt’s breakdown.

⚠ marks a voice credit that appears only in Owlcat’s Xbox Wire post. Regina’s is confirmed twice, by Xbox Wire and by the actress herself.

Zafar is a Martian engineer, not an Earther gunner

Fextralife’s companion page lists Zafar as an Earther gunner. That row was copied from Michael DeGarmo. The official site, PC Gamer and Xbox Wire all say Zafar is a Martian mechanical engineer, a former military engineer in “self-imposed exile”. He is the first companion you meet: he is your old friend on Pinkwater 4 in the Beta, and he joins your team early in the game. His deployable Martian turret can be upgraded toward faster fire and projectile interception, or a heavy-caliber area module.

Each companion in brief

• J is your identical twin and the captain’s right hand. J mirrors your sex and appearance, so creating your character means creating two. See character creation.
• Regina Marek is a former top corporate spy with her own agenda. She marks targets with a combat scanner and snipes from range.
• Mateo “Teo” Lee is a combat doctor who was a top student at an elite Earth university before losing his right to practise medicine. The official site lists his origin as Lunar.
• Polly Haart is the youngest of the crew, a Belter teenager from Ceres whose OPA father is dead. She is the one companion you shape directly (see below).
• Aleesha Young is a sarcastic Martian ex-corporate tech worker who prefers machines to people. She hacks enemy systems and fields a drone swarm. See hacking.
• Michael DeGarmo escaped Earth’s Basic Assistance, served in the UN army and ran his own mercenary crew. He holds the front line with an autocannon and a heavy shield.

Polly’s mentor system

From the official August 18, 2026 dev blog: you choose which crew member mentors Polly. That decides her profession, whether a cautious hacker, an engineer or a medic. It also unlocks a unique skill line and changes her role on missions and her appearance.

Squad rules and permadeath

Two companions go into the field with you. The rest support from the Gemini or run their own objectives. Owlcat has confirmed the Mass Effect 2 suicide mission inspired how off-field crew can still help (see the FAQ).

Companions can die. Owlcat said at the New Game+ showcase: “The Expanse universe is cruel and some characters might die because of your choices.” AltChar reports there is no way to reverse it, and the official choices blog says faction relations affect “the fates of important characters”. Some wikis add that losing a romanced companion hits harder and that Owlcat named Mass Effect 2 as the permadeath model. We found no developer quote for either, so we don’t repeat them as fact.

Romance

Owlcat has confirmed romance four times but has not said which companions are romanceable. The February 2026 Valentine’s post featuring Zafar and Regina is marketing, not confirmation. Everything known is on the romance page.

Names that aren’t companions

• Luciana: a traveling vendor and gossip on Pinkwater 4 in the Beta.
• Larry: the overworked Pinkwater 4 dispatcher. One preview calls him “Harry”, which is a typo.
• Oscar O’Connell: your Pinkwater boss.
• “Jay” and “the twin”: both mean J.

Still unannounced

• When Regina, Teo, Polly, Aleesha and Michael join.
• Voice actors for Teo, Polly, Aleesha and female J.
• The new voice for the male captain and male J, after Owlcat replaced the original following Beta feedback ⚠ name not announced.
