Why people compare them
Both are single-player, third-person sci-fi RPGs due in spring 2027, both take two companions into a fight, both put romance and choices up front, and both are pitched at players still waiting on the next Mass Effect. Owlcat says the original trilogy was “absolutely an inspiration”. Exodus comes from Archetype Entertainment, a studio founded by veterans of Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate and Knights of the Old Republic, with Drew Karpyshyn among its writers.
Release dates
Exodus announced April 7, 2027 at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August. Osiris Reborn still has only a window, spring 2027, and Owlcat didn’t give a date at IGN Fan Fest on October 14. Unless that changes, Exodus is the one you can plan around. Details on our release date page.
Setting and tone
Osiris Reborn is set inside an existing universe. It runs alongside the first two Expanse books, starting in the Eros lockdown, with Protogen as the enemy and Earth, Mars and the Belt pulling you in different directions. It is grounded and political. See the timeline.
Exodus invents its own: humanity 40,000 years from now, a homeworld threatened by a Celestial virus called the Rot, ancient ruins across the Centauri Cluster, and intelligent “Awakened” animals. Its signature is time dilation: travel at near light-speed and your choices play out across generations on the worlds you leave behind.
Your character
Osiris Reborn gives you a custom captain: sex, appearance, and an Earther, Martian or Belter origin, with no fixed class. Your twin J copies your look. See character creation.
In Exodus you are always Jun Aslan, male or female. Gamereactor reports Archetype dropped a normal slider creator to give Jun “a more established look”, keeping options such as hair, eyes, makeup and tattoos. One invited previewer described it as a full creator ⚠ conflicting reports; we go with Gamereactor’s more detailed account.
Companions and romance
Osiris Reborn has seven companions, including your twin, and they can die permanently. Romance is confirmed but Owlcat hasn’t named partners or said anything about same-sex options (see romance).
Exodus mixes human and Awakened-animal companions, such as Salt, an octopus sniper in a combat mech, and Emrys, a support character from a Celestial species. Archetype has told Kotaku its romances aren’t locked by gender. You can’t romance Salt.
Which should you play?
- You love The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. It is the only one with the Belt, Protogen and Lang Belta, built with the show’s own language and gesture creators.
- You want to play something this year: Osiris Reborn’s paid Beta is the only option.
- You want sweeping space opera and a fixed date: Exodus.
- You want both: they are likely only weeks apart, so wait for reviews of whichever lands first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Exodus related to The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
No. Exodus is an original universe from Archetype Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Osiris Reborn is Owlcat’s licensed game set in The Expanse. They share a genre and a release year, nothing else.
Which comes out first, Osiris Reborn or Exodus?
Exodus has a fixed date, April 7, 2027. Osiris Reborn is listed for spring 2027 (Q2 on Steam) with no exact date, so Exodus is on track to arrive first unless Owlcat dates Osiris for early April.
Which one is more like Mass Effect?
Both openly borrow from it. Exodus is written by ex-BioWare veterans and has a Paragon/Renegade-style Paladin/Immortal system. Osiris Reborn copies the squad, ship-hub and cover-shooter shape, but drops fixed classes.
Can you create your own character in Exodus like in Osiris Reborn?
Less so. In Exodus you are always Jun Aslan, male or female, with limited appearance options. Osiris Reborn lets you set your captain’s sex, appearance and origin.
Can I play either one now?
Only Osiris Reborn, through its paid closed Beta for Miller’s Pack and Collector’s Edition owners. Exodus has no public test.
